History of FAFAA “First Aid For Asthma Attacks”

History of FAFAA “First Aid For Asthma Attacks”

In 1983 I began to develop a holistic based protocol for managing asthma. The protocol, thoroughly explained in “Golden Wings…”, integrates holistic healing and allopathic conventional medicine.

When my daughter was two years old, she developed asthma. By the time she was three, I had formulated a holistic protocol for managing asthma. Now over 30 years later, she continues to successfully manage her asthma holistically.

However, I do know on two occasions she was treated in the hospital for asthma. She was 10 years old the first time and had gone south to visit relatives. I received a call from her aunt telling me that my daughter was having an asthma attack. Though she had brought her herbal medicines with her and knew how to take them, her aunt didn’t feel comfortable and called to ask me what she should do. I told her aunt “take her to the nearest emergency room”.

The second time that I’m aware of her going to a hospital, occurred when she was a teenager. While she and a friend were out, she developed an asthma attack and called me from the emergency room. Luckily it’s been years since she’s had an attack.

HIncorporating Holistic and Conventional Modalities

So, now back to the main point. During the early years of my daughter’s asthma, I thought to myself… “Why can’t I incorporate some of the holistic healing modalities that I use to manage my daughter’s asthma with conventional allopathic medical modes”?

Frequently working in the asthma section of the ER and seeing so many asthma patients suffer through hours of trying to breathe, I decided at some point that I would test my ideas with what I believed could easily be implemented.

While working one night, I made a decision. I replaced the ice water the patients were drinking with water that was room temperature. I had them drink 3-4 cups of room temperature water before they took each nebulizer treatment and epi injection – a total of three cycles (that was that particular hospital’s medical protocol).

By the end of the third cycle, within 1 hour and 15 minutes, patients were usually feeling much better, lungs were clear and they were generally ready to go home.

Holistic Healing Modalities Initiated

For those patients not well enough to leave, I would inform the doctor and get orders to insert an IV, bolus with aminophylline and solumedrol and begin an aminophylline drip (at that time that was the drug protocol).

reflexology treatments to their feet and contact healing to their chest (contact healing – aka therapeutic touch, helps to relax lungs and bronchioles). While awake, they would continue to drink water and sometimes – let’s not forget – going to the bathroom (chuckle chuckle). And lastly, I would offer nutritional recommendations.
Sometimes these patients were able to go home by morning. Others had to be admitted. However, the patients that had to be admitted were generally breathing a lot easier than they were when they first came in.

United States 3,600 People Die Annually from Asthma

Sometime later, I found out that in the United States there are 25 million asthmatics and that 3,600 people die annually from asthma (Death rate decreased from 5,000 in 2001). It was then that I began to teach holistic based asthma management workshops and present seminars that included – how to use prescribed inhalers correctly.

I also found out that Asthma is the third-ranked cause of hospitalization for children and the number one cause of school absenteeism, accounting for a total of 14 million missed school days.

I Wanted to Introduce The School to a Holistic Based Protocol That I Had Developed for Asthma Attacks

About the time I began to write “Golden Wings…”, I was one of two nurses at an elementary public school located in the South Bronx, New York City. As you may or may not know, the South Bronx has one of the highest asthma hospitalization rates for children in New York City.

At this school there were 35 known asthmatics. Most days the Nurse’s office was like a mini-emergency room. In addition to the “comings and goings” every day for the usual stomachaches, cuts, and bruises, children were going home every day for asthma.

There was one student I’ll call James, who went home at the same time every day because of asthma. Indeed, we certainly knew when it was one o’clock…

Some Days Could Be Very Overwhelming

Some days could be very overwhelming. Then, one day, I decided to do something about it. I was excited about the idea; I knew that it was a revolutionary move, but one that I felt would really help the children. I talked it over with Nurse Harriet and she agreed, so… I went to the Principal, who well aware of the situation, sat down and listened to my request.

Research Shows Dairy Products Aggravate Asthma

I had been teaching this protocol and using it successfully with my clients. So, I felt strongly that it would also work well with the children. I explained to her that there were two components – ‘preventive’ and ‘first aid’.

The preventive involved dietary changes – not serving dairy at lunch to the asthmatics, offering a substitution instead. There is research that shows that dairy products aggravate asthma. http://www.naturalnews.com/010443.html And the first aid was just that – an emergency intervention to help an asthmatic during an attack while awaiting medical attention.

The Principal was very interested, but said there was only one snag. I would have to get a letter from each of the parents requesting that their child not be given dairy at lunch. She said that once the letters were received, I would be free to introduce the protocol.

I immediately contacted the parents and explained to each one that I wanted to decrease the frequency and severity of their child’s asthma attacks. I talked to them about the important role diet plays in preventing asthma attacks, and requested that dairy products, food with additives and “junk” food be eliminated from their child’s diet; in addition, requested their child eliminate sodas and drink more water – room temperature.

The parents expressed great interest. To my surprise I received 35 letters all requesting that their child not be given dairy products at lunch time.

I called each student aside and speaking to each one privately told him/her about my plans and asked how he/she felt about participating. I explained the basis of the protocol to the children, including, how to routinely give themselves Asthma Reflexology treatments at home.

The Students Were Very Eager to Learn Everything

Interestingly enough, the students were very eager to learn everything. I told them about the importance of drinking room temperature water every day; in addition, I encouraged them to read labels. Eliminate “junk” food and naturally, dairy including to their dismay…ice cream.

I designed a Holistic Asthma Control Chart that I posted on the wall; the chart indicated the reflexology sites on the foot to be pressed. Later, I developed an additional Preventive Asthma Chart for Kids.

Parents were kept informed about what the children were learning and were encouraged to come to the school to learn Asthma reflexology and contact healing. A few parents did come.

Some students accompanying their asthmatic classmates to the Nurse’s office, were curious about the Asthma Control and Reflexology Chart, and expressed a desire to learn. They were taught First Aid for Asthma Attacks and encouraged to participate in treating their classmates. Those students learned about the importance of drinking water, eating leafy greens, salads and fruits cutting down on junk food and bread, as well as how to apply reflexology and do contact healing.

End of The School Year Rarely Sending Children Home

I know – you want to know the outcome of all this. Well… By the end of the first year, the number of asthmatics coming into the office had decreased quite a bit; we were rarely sending children home.
There were times when students would come to the office wheezing and NOT have their asthma medication. The students would be given 2-4 cups of water (depending on age, body size and size of cup), treated with reflexology and contact healing, then sent back to class – no longer wheezing. Students remained fine throughout the day; this was more like “the norm” rather than the exception. Parents were always notified.

End of Second Year Only 2 Students Had to Be Sent Home

The second year, very few students were coming to the Nurse’s office for asthma related problems. By the end of that year, only TWO students had to be sent home.

You remember James who went home every day (we could tell the time by him)? Well, he did very well that 2nd year – going home only once; he was one of the two students sent home.

James would still come to the office every morning for his asthma treatment – Albuterol inhaler as ordered by his Doctor. Most mornings, he had mild wheezing and would automatically go and grab a cup to drink his 2-3 cups of water before taking his inhaler. Whenever his wheezing was more moderate, James, in addition to getting his water would initiate reflexology treatments on himself. He would usually be back in class within 45 minutes and be fine for rest of the day.

Isn’t This a Real Success Story?

Over the years, I have seen how well FAFAA works. The success I and others have had using this proven protocol and a desire to help others is what motivated me to produce this DVD. I consider FAFAA a Gift to Humanity and so the FAFAA video is not for sale.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the bad news… Well, the bad news is that the merit or validity of this protocol – First Aid For Asthma Attacks (FAFAA) has not been ‘validated’ scientifically. Unfortunately, I don’t have the resources to do it. However, if there is anyone who wants to do research on this protocol, please feel free to do so. You may contact Me at fafaa.info@gmail.com.
